High Scoring in East Grinstead's Spring Open Shoot

In gloomy conditions but light winds forty four competitors from the Home Counties achieved some high scores in the East Grinstead Target Shooting Club’s Annual Spring Meeting at the weekend.

In the main Double Dewar competition comprising two targets at both 50 metres and 100 yards, winner of Class ‘A’ Robert Dowling of Chichester scored a magnificent 791 ex 800, being the first time in 30 years that the competition was won with a score over 790. All the more significant because 1989 was the year the rings on the targets were reduced in size making it more difficult to obtain high scores.

Runner up in Class ‘A’ was Michael Dowe of St Nicholas Rifle & Pistol Club with a score of 787. Class ‘B’ was won by Sara Marshall of East Grinstead scoring 762. The Ladies Dewar was won by Sue Norman of Tunbridge Wells Target Shooting Club with a score of 390 ex 400. In the Veterans’ Dewar Linda Smallbone of East Grinstead narrowly beat Malcolm Brian of East Grinstead on count back, both achieving a score of 388 ex 400. This was a tremendous piece of shooting by Malcolm who said beforehand that, as he'd previously won the veterans, he would like to take home the 2nd prize to complete the set!

The cool weather also resulted in a high demand for bacon rolls and other refreshments to be enjoyed in EGTSC’s comfortable Club House. There was a small disaster in the kitchen when the fish slice broke. Luckily we had a spare!

Following the presentations there was another minor incident when one of the spring loaded photo backdrops decided to put itself away rather fast and ended up broken.

Future Competitions

East Grinstead will be hosting a further two Open Shoots shortly; the Eastbourne & District Small-bore Rifle League’s Thwaites Competition on Sunday 12 May, and the Sussex County Rifle meeting on Sunday 9 June.
